Canon G11 camera is my personal all-time favourite camera. As an eco-beauty blogger and jet-setting traveller, I seriously cannot live without my Canon G11 camera. It takes amazing photos - indoor, outdoor, sunset, portraits, landscape...every shot is always perfect. Color is rich, subjects are in focus and has great macro capabilities.
Canon's Powershot G series has been a market leader in compact DSLR cameras. And rightly so. Amongst all its G series cameras, the G11 is probably the best of the lot. There is little in the market that can match its combination of zoom range, lens flexibility and build quality.
With blogging, I take a lot of point-and-shoot type photos with macro functionality. Depending on the location and time of day, I may also have to manually adjust my lighting functions. All of which are super easy with the G11. Before I continue, I have to say that I am not a photographer. So, I am not the best person on technical know-hows of the camera.
Not only is the G11 the champion of the compact DSLR camera market, but it is definitely the undisputed champion amongst its Powershot G series peers.
Here are the features highlight and why I seriously love the G11 (especially for blogging):
- 10.0 megapixel CCD sensor
- 5x wide-angle zoom len with optical image stabilizer
- 2.8" swivel/tilt LCD
- RAW image recording
- 26 shooting modes with manual control and custom settings
- iContrast boosts brightness and retains detail in dark areas
- Dedicated exposure compensation and ISO dials
When you compare the G11 against its peers, the differences are stark. When compared to the G10, the biggest disadvantage of the G10 is its fixed LCD screen (compared to G11's swivel and tilt LCD screen). This is particular useful if you film lots of self-shoot videos and take couple or you-in-background shots. Also, the G10 is slightly chunkier in size than the G11.
When compared to the G12, I have noticed that the G12 does not take sharp photos at night. And some point-and-shoot photos can turn out grainy and out-of-focus. Again, without going into the technical aspect, I can say the point-and-shot photo quality of the G12 loses to the G11.
The battery life of the G11 is unbelievable. I have gone away on a week holiday and only needed to re-charge it once, at most twice.
Basically, the G11 is an excellent point-and-shoot compact camera that shoots with DSLR photo quality.
Unfortunately, the G11 is not readily available in camera shops because it launched back in 2009 and is considered an older model (G15 is the latest model). But in the world of cameras, old does not mean bad, neither does new mean good. In fact, sometimes the older models are the better models. And in the case of the G11, I seriously believe so.
Here are some photos I took with my G11 for my blog. Do note that these photos are taken as point-and-shoot (without any manual adjustments) and are not edited for quality. Notice the detail it picks up near and far, as well as the tone of colors.

The best place to buy the Canon Powershot G11 that I would highly recommend is on Amazon. You can buy both new and used sets here depending on your budget. It beats dealing with pushy camera sales people that will only try to confuse you more and sell you something you may not need, but will give them the highest commission.
